Outer Loop at Staunton State Park
Justin AlberShare
Big climbs, better views, and a few sketchy corners — Staunton’s Outer Loop is a full-on Colorado classic. Expect wildflowers, loose-over-hardpack descents, and more smiles than miles. Rode this one in the Dakota Ridge Jersey.
There are days where the ride is the goal. Not a personal record. Not a big send. Just getting out into the mountains and moving forward. That was this ride.
We hit the Outer Loop at Staunton State Park — one of those Front Range gems that somehow still flies under the radar on a late Friday afternoon, shhh. It starts out mellow and scenic, then slowly grinds its way up to 9,500 feet, winding through dense forest and big open views. You earn everything here. Every descent is paid for in full.
We started at the main lot and climbed clockwise, taking Staunton Ranch > Bugling Elk > Lion’s Back > Border Line. That Lion’s Back climb hits hard — steep and rocky, but cleanable if your legs are still fresh. At the top, we caught our breath and looked out over the valley below. Colorado doing its thing again.
The highlight, as always, was ripping down Mason Creek. Fast, flowy, and a little sketchy in places. Some of those corners come up quick, and the decomposed granite was extra loose that day. Definitely a “stay light on the front tire” type descent. I’d call it controlled chaos — the kind of trail where you have to trust your instincts and let the bike dance a little.
Trail conditions were dry, bordering on dusty, but temps stayed reasonable in the low 70s. Sun gave way to clouds mid-ride, and the breeze at elevation felt like air-conditioning straight from the alpine gods.
I wore the Dakota Ridge Jersey, which felt right at home out there. That reddish tone blends into the terrain like it was made for these trails — probably because it was. I shot those base textures while riding Dakota Ridge last season, and they’ve held up beautifully in embroidery. It’s one of those jerseys that feels minimal but looks rich up close. Durable, breathable, and not too flashy — just how I like it.
The crew kept a solid pace all day, but this ride wasn’t about hammering. It was about the rhythm of the trail, the feel of the dirt under your tires, and the reminder that some of the best moments in life don’t come with a finish line.
